Our Practice Philosophy
Our philosophy is how we define ourselves as dentists -- not so much what we do but the way we do it.
Most importantly, patients of all ages are human beings first and patients second. You will be treated with the respect due to all people, regardless of your language, economic status, place of origin, skin colour or any other difference.
We recognize that people seeking dental treatment are often anxious. Your mouth is a private place, an intimate part of your body, so this is understandable. Your anxiety might appear in many forms – from avoiding seeing us altogether, to asking many questions. However you display your anxiety, we will endeavour to help you.
There is no such thing as a stupid question. We will answer all your questions patiently and as thoroughly as we can.
In addition to being patient and understanding, we keep up to date with the latest knowledge and technology in order to produce an experience as comfortable and pain free as possible. We have nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” that helps you relax. Dr. Burman is also trained in acupuncture and hypnosis to help you with your fears and anxieties. We can also prescribe sedative medication if you need it (as long as you have someone to take you home afterwards).
Our staff are friendly and understanding as well. We do our best to provide a harmonious working environment so that they will be at their best to work with you. From the first phone call to the treatment situation and afterwards, they will strive to make you feel welcome and cared for.
Why do we recommend regular checkups?
More and more connections are being found between the health of your teeth and gums and general conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. So regular dental examinations are necessary not only for good dental health but for your general health as well.
In addition to checking for tooth decay and gum disease, we also routinely look for fungal infections, potential muscle and joint problems, misalignment of teeth and jaws, suspicious lesions that might be indicative of other diseases.
For example, visit this information sheet about pre-malignant oral lesions.

Every person has different needs and not everyone needs six monthly visits. Some patients should be seen every three months; for others once a year is adequate.
Preventive treatment
Even people who experience no problems can develop gum disease or tooth decay, which we can spot either visually or with X-rays long before you become aware of it yourself. The science of preventive dentistry is advancing rapidly. We are now able to treat early tooth decay preventively, even helping to remineralize tooth structure that previously would have had to be filled - as long as there isn't an actual hole (cavity). However, if you miss preventive appointments, a tiny spot of decay that we are treating preventively can become a deep cavity that may endanger the overall future of the tooth. We can often prevent the need for fillings even where there are signs of decay as long as there isn't an actual break in the enamel (a hole), even if decay shows up in an Xray with the use of fluoride varnish and toothpastes along with mouth rinse containing fluoride and xyliltol (a natural sugar made from the inner bark of birch trees).
Similarly with gum disease. An area of inflammation can be diagnosed and treated before it becomes a deep pocket that might require surgery to correct. With regular cleaning (scaling) we can remove the cause of the inflammation and coach you in the most effective way to keep your gums healthy.
We can also advise you on the best foods to eat or avoid for good dental and general health, as well as help with quitting smoking.

Dry mouth
Saliva is an important element in your digestive system and necessary for your comfort and well being. It contains minerals that can repair teeth at the earliest stages of decay. It contains enzymes that begin the process of digestion. It contains antibodies that keep the natural bacteria in your mouth in balance. It lubricates your teeth and gums to make eating more enjoyable.
Several conditions can lead to reduction in the flow of saliva. This can be from disease or injury of the salivary glands or as a side effect from taking certain medications. When saliva dries up the bacteria in your mouth get out of balance and can cause rampant tooth decay. To combat this condition several products have been introduced to stimulate saliva.
If you experience dry mouth we will be able to advise you of the best approach.
Gum disease
More adults lose teeth because of gum disease than for any other reason. It usually starts off as redness and swelling of the gums around the teeth, sometimes with bleeding when brushing. At this stage, professional cleaning and careful attention to cleaning the bacterial film off your teeth at the gum line should reverse this problem. If the disease progresses to the bone that holds your teeth in then deep cleaning and even surgery might be indicated.
